Battle Royale!

Whew what day it had been!

The following write up may seem a bit exaggerated but, hey, thats how I like to view it and thats how i shall put it up!

I'm speaking of the Association Cup Cricket tournament we have in college. The matches are held annually, between the students from 4th year to first year and cricket matches are held between the teams of these years, belonging to the Compsciz family.

Yesterday ( November 20th, '07) was the day we had our match with the 4th years. It was our first match in the qualifiers and there was too much pressure on our team, facing the seniors.

The day was off due to some need-not-be-mentioned problems in the college and we spent the first half registering for the 3rd semester university exams(truly, thinking of it gives me creeps!)

After loitering around the campus for the rest of the day without any specific purpose what-so-ever, came the moment we were eagerly waiting for.
The match started at about 11.45 or so( I was not there to see it commencing). The 4th years were to bat first and the match was scheduled for 12 overs. Our team came up fairly well with about 30 extra runs and as we watched the batters put up a appreciable score of 96 runs from 12 overs at the loss of 7 wickets. It is indeed an unassailable total to chase for the team to bat next, or so did it seem at that time.

A small drinks break followed and soon the second innings began. Our team incurred the loss of two early wickets as the score board ticked staggeringly.
But soon the situation changed as Jerry came on to bat as number four in the order. The team was losing wickets at one end, while at the other Jerry stood like the rock of Gibraltar, picking up one's and two's and converting them to three's whenever such a situation was provided.

The score boomed towards the end of the innings as the target now became 30 runs from 18 balls. Another batter was lost and we were clinching to the final straw of hope. 10th over and the one following it proved good for the team and as we entered the final overs of the match the win was attainable at a run per ball.
The dramatic situation grew unbearable and all of us, the viewers, were standing impatiently as each ball was thrown. Jeers and cheers accompanied each good ball and each good drift.

The match reached its climax with the runs levelled, or in technical terms, at a draw. We had another ball to face and another run to chase and none other than the blaster Jerry was at the batting end.
The final ball of the match pitched and swivelled to his legside, what seemed to us the onlookers as a wide, but Jerry the Stakhanovite had forced his bat to give it a nice little flick as it raced towards the fine leg fielder. The crowd( not many, about 30 or so) erupted and ran into the ground, hoisting Jerry and Ashith( batter at the other end) up in air.

It was one hell of a match and the tension had paramounted so much that it eased in this show of victory. We all headed towards the canteen in a processsion and the talks on the exciting finish continued there as well, all the while sipping soft-drinks and sip-ups.
Jerry had hit a massive 44 in our pile of 97 runs. It was truly an exciting finish to an enthralling match!! Rest of the team had put in their two penny as well as none of our batters were dismissed on a duck and none of our bowlers returned without a wicket!

Three cheers to US!!

P.S: the day was quite special for other special reasons as well!!

Om Shanti Om Rocks!!

King Khan proves it yet again!! He's the unbeatable prince of Bollywood. SRK's new venture, Om Shanti Om is yet another thriller with picture perfect scenes and Indians get a new sensational beauty to their actress List- Deepika Padukone.

Yesterday was a bad day to begin with.I was stuck in a traffic jam for the first time after coming here. Reached class late. Came to know that an exam that was scheduled for the day has been postponed. Immediate plans were made then and there. Upon enquiry, we received the reply that tickets for the matinee show of Om Shanti Om have been already sold out.

Hence we decided to watch Sawariya.Came out of the theatre half way in the film, I just could not bear the melodrama. Perhaps its not the type I would prefer to be a viewer of!! Rahul and me, started off immediately to the next theatre in the vicinity where O.S.O was being screened and unfortunately we had to satisfy ourselves with the front row tickets costing Rs.15. There were about 12 of us and we set in for the screening, eagerly waiting for the first glimpse of Deeepika.

The movie turned out to be hilarious and our joy had no bounds. We danced near the white screen for every song of the movie and it was my first experience tapping my feet in front of such a large crowd( though I wouldn't bet my chances on having been noticed ;) ! )

The movie has a song that shows 32 superstars of Indian Cinema, past and present. Here's a pic from the song..

Didn't realise the time flying by and soon we were out and moving to the next theatre.Yes, believe me, we were on a movie marathon last night. Settled in for Tamil Superstar Vijay's "Azhagiya Tamil Magan".This movie made me remember the earlier RajaniKant movies, contributing their stunt scenes and songs.Story seemed to be a distant image of a Hollywood movie I had seen long back but the screenplay by the Ilayathalapathi Vijay( Ilaya means junior and Thalapathi refers to Rajanikant, I suppose) makes this movie good enough to sit and watch for the 3 hours.

We were out of the theatre at 0030 hours(he he, a military touch!). I hadn't had my lunch nor dinner for the day and was hungry enough to eat up anything that wouldn't bite me back!! Roamed in the city searching for a hotel to be open this late in the night and having not found any, settled with two glasses of sweet tap water, apologising to my tummy for my negligence.

We all slept together in the hostel "Chandra Villa", better known in the campus as "Compsciz Hub". Woke up early in the morning(9a.m), and returned home.

Jobs for the Day:
1. Brush.
2.Have food.
3.Do a bit of studies for the day and for the internals coming up next week.
4.Write up an article for my brother's assignment on Indian Politics.
5.Sleep in between if time permits.
6.Call up pals and chat for hours.

P.S: To all of you out there.. Happy Diwali...

Relax??What Does That Mean?

Its been a long time since I have had the opportunity to scribble anything. The way things around me were moving was so fast that I was finding it difficult to catch up in this long race.
A lot has been happening in the very few days that passed by.
A welcoming news in this regard is that we, the S3 Compsciz are about to embark on our semi-annual tour. And the destination--?? Land of Mist Kodaikanal and the The scenic bliss of Hogganakal.

Let me leave here a glimpse of what we are about to visit and relish.
First up- A foggy morning in Kodai.

Last one whole week in college was spent by us on planning the destination, the expected expense listing and arranging facilities upon reaching the fore said places.
We are leaving Thrissur on 31st eve around 7p.m and thus will start another episode of fun and joy unplugged, as its been happening from the time we got together here. this is just another leg in our memoirs.
Here's a view of the coir boat in Hogganakkal, that stars above all attractions associated with this place.

Expected number of people on this trip is somewhere between 40 and 45 and thence its a Herculean task of arranging all attributes associated to this tour. Work was split and teams of people were sent around with specific purposes like checking out the travel expenses and booking the transportation necessary, getting official consent( the toughest of all jobs was this!! ), planning the itinerary and deciding the stay.

A Teacher from our college is expected to accompany us in our excursion and his Family will be giving him company while he's with us. :)

Sailesh, Priya, Merlin, Tony and myself were engaged yesterday in persuading the staff on accompanying us lest the trip gets cancelled as it is mandatory as per the regulations by the State Government that teaching staff is to assist the students in "Educational Tours and Industrial Visits". :0

Bristow, Ashith, Sethu, Rogen and Others
were engaged in the strenuous task of organising local arrangements including transportation and everything.

We all are very keen on the outcome of our work and expecting the best to come our way, hoping that everything will move as finely as its been till now. Awaiting with Crossed fingers(in literal terminology :))

that's it for now.
more details after getting back from the fun trip.

I'm currently at Mysore, back home for the festival of the year the Dasara Celebrations. Here's a glimpse of the Procession that shall take place tomorrow, known as the Jumbo Savari.More details on Mysore and DDasara in Next Post.

Sadly though, I will be missing all this fun as I am getting back to college by morning the day after, meaning that I've to leave Mysore by evening tomorrow.

Yesterday was memorable day. It was MY parents' 21st Anniversary!! Now you would ask why is it special!!??
Well, its special for me because they are my parents and the best in the business!!
We had dinner from Mysore's very own Green Leaf restaurant. And, a thrilling offer was made to me yesterday on account of the occasion- I will be provided the necessary budget to get the mobile phone of my choice!!!

Well, to speak of Mysore, every house I saw today was in the festive mood of Navami and people were seen decorating their homes, offices and vehicles with flowers and offering Puja at Temples.

It is true- Cultural Heritage is What makes us, Indians, Special!!!

That's it for now,

'Dam!!' Its Gorgeous!! Peechi dam, Thrissur

Peechi Dam( Reservoir) provides for the water supply to more than half the population of Thrissur district. Thanks to the Weather phenomena happening some where in Indonesia, the state of Kerala has been receiving heavy rains for the last 10 days. The water level in the dam has reached the apex thus making it essential to lift its "shutters", which control the level of water stored in the reservoir.

We, a gang of 12, took this as an opportunity to relish in the lap of nature overlooking the region surrounding the dam. Cars, belonging to Rohit and Bristow were arranged for immediately, and congested though we were, made it to Peechi which was roughly 17kms from Thrissur City.

It was drizzling as we reached Peechi. We approached the location directly over the shutter where from one could actually feel the rumble of water gushing savagely through a narrow gap of 20 Inches to the surface 50 feet+ below. It was definitely a view of a lifetime seeing the water in the adjacent reservoir touching maximum level for the first time in 20-25 years. I remembered Samuel Taylor Coleridge's words,"Water water everywhere, not a drop to drink" as in this case we could not reach the actual water body because of restrictions by the authorities.:)

It was followed by a hike into jungle nearby. We went on narrow forest paths, where on only one person can walk abreast, all the time awestruck by the sheer power of water, the force of which hitting rock bottom was deafening. Our trek through the jungle came to an end at a small rivulet where in we halted and took rest. It was getting dark(6.30p.m) and they say, in jungle night falls even before one realises. :)

The trek was loaded with many funny instances of people quoting doubts on a small motion in the nearby bush mistaking it to be snakes and all. We soon returned back to Civilisation and made our way to the bottom of the fall.Jets of water formed mist all around upon meeting with the base ground and it was a wonderful feeling relinquishing all worries of the day and letting mind float over the beautiful waves that were being created and destroyed every moment.
Kerala is truly, the God's own Country.

Everyone chose to stay for the night at my place upon compulsion. Ramakrishnan was given birthday bumps at 0000hrs as he is turning 19 today. As always, we sat around debating on a field of common interest and the talks went on till 2 in the morning when we called it a "day" and went to sleep.

It was one rare experience all together and a real nice getaway from our busy schedules in and after college :).

Three Cheers to the Men in Blue!! The Cup is Ours!!

An exciting finish to an exciting match. India wins the ICC Twenty20 World Cup beating their neighbour and arch rival Pakistanon Wanderers Stadium. And what a match it was!!

My classmates and I cancelled our daily class at Pramode Sir's to watch this match with great expectations. After reading the article by Md Mudassir Alam yesterday, i was eager to know the result of what he called the Mother of all Matches.

I spent time watching Indian batting at our all-time hang-out- Wimbies with my classmates and many other ardent Indian Fans. Towards the end of the Indian innings it seemed as though there were very little chances of snatching the Cup from the rivals.

I placed a bet(for a Burger :))with my friend on the odds against Indian win. I returned home soon after the batting of the blue squad was over, expecting only a miracle that could save them from stopping Pakistan.

Soon I heard the disheartening news of Sreesanth being hit for 21 runs in a single over. Thereafter, came the moments that will get etched in golden letters in World Cricket history, when Team India was lead on a path of Come back by the captain on the First ever Twenty20 World Cup and what a return was that!!! The final overs were nail-biting moments( as always when India plays Pakistan :) ). The first ball of the last over ,which the last man standing for Pakistan hit for a six, reduced the runs needed for their win to 6 from 4 balls and it seemed to be a nail on India's coffin.

Then ahoy! the ball that followed saw the same batter giving catching practice to our fielder thus pulling the curtains on Pakistan's Innings. Dhoni, captain of the team on this Foreign tour, was on cloud nine as the artistic cameramen rightly showed and the elated Men in Blue went about doing the renowned Indian Huddle and making merry.

The final score card was as follows: India 157 for 5 wickets in 20 overs.Pakistan bowled out at 152 in 19.3 overs. Man of the match awarded to Irfan Pathan and Shahid Afridi was elected the Player of the Tournament.

Team India was seen doing the lap of honour expressing their courtesy to us, the Indian fans for the centum support offered :).

This match proved to be one hell of an entertainer and the win is a great moment of pride for every Indian. Its been 30 minutes since the match has finished and I can still hear the bursts of crackers and other fireworks in the neighbourhood where there is no bound to the peoples' joy. :)

Proud to be an Indian!!!

I welcome all to express your comments on the joy of India's win...
